It was during the special address of HE Mbella Mbella, Minister of External Relations, during the dinner offered at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé on September 29, 2020, that the presentation of the candidacy of Ms. Yap Née Njoupouo Mariatou, as Secretary General of the International Civil Defense Organization (ICPO), was announced to the Diplomatic Corps.
15 days later, Cameroonian diplomacy wins with the election of the Cameroonian as Secretary General of the International Civil Protection Organization, with 32 votes against 23 for the Lebanese candidate.
The election took place today during the 24th session of the ICDO General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.
She is the very first woman and the very first Cameroonian to hold this position.
This election comes following the resignation of Vladimir KUVSHINOV, former Secretary General, this Universal Institution.
Ms. Yap Mariatou is also Cameroon Focal Point at the Risk and Disaster Management and Climate Change Adequacy Unit of the Economic Community of Central African States (GRC / ACC-CEEAC).
The International Civil Protection Organization (ICPO) is an intergovernmental organization whose objective is to contribute to the development by States of structures ensuring the protection and assistance of populations and protecting property and the environment against natural disasters or man-made. These structures are generally known under the names of civil protection, civil defense, civil security and are all concerned with the management of emergency situations. The OIPC brings together the national structures set up for this purpose by the States in order to promote cooperation and mutual solidarity between them. The ICPO is 59 member states, 16 observer states and 23 affiliate members. It was in Paris that General Physician Georges SAINT-PAUL founded the Association on May 28, 1931.
