Are you looking for a solution to organize meetings by videoconference with your relatives or colleagues? There is no lack of choice, even among the free solutions: WhatsApp, Skype or Google Hangouts have made a good place in our daily lives to keep the link during confinement. However, certain solutions, more intended for professionals, can also be used on a personal basis.

This is the case of Zoom, a professional platform much appreciated in business, which has several advantages, and which can be used free of charge, therefore by individuals. First, there is not a single application to install, everything is done online, via a simple web browser. Then, only the person who organizes the meeting needs to have a Zoom account: the guests do not need to create an account to participate in a videoconference. Finally, these video meetings up to 100 participants. Something to see coming, even when you want to gather a large group of friends! The only imitation of the free version is that meetings are limited to 40 minutes. A reasonable duration and quite sufficient in most cases.

Here's how to make a group call from a computer, and how to join the meeting.

Create a Zoom account

To start a meeting on Zoom, you must have an account, even a free one. There is nothing to download, everything is done online.

  • With your usual web browser, go to the website of Zoom.
  • On the home page of the site, click on the blue button Subscribe, it's free, top right.
  • The registration page opens. Enter your email address, as requested, then click Subscribe. Then validate the Captcha which may be displayed.

  • A confirmation email is sent to you in parallel. Open the message in your mailbox and click on the button Account activation.

  • A new one then opens in your browser on the Zoom site. Fill out the form as requested, with your first name, last name and password, then click Continue.

  • Your account is created. You can move on.

Make a group video call on Zoom


  • Click on with video enabled.
  • A new page opens. Depending on your browser, an authorization request window may open. Click on Open Zoom to confirm that you want to access the service.


  • After a loading time, a new window opens. This is the video window. You should also see your face appear if the camera on your computer is detected.
  • If an additional window Join the audio opens, click Join audio through computer . You can also click Test speaker and microphone if you are using these accessories and want to test them.


  • The setting options for your video meeting are visible as an icon at the bottom of the meeting window. Please note, if your mouse cursor is outside this frame, the icons may not be visible. In this case, move the mouse over the frame of the video image.


  • You can activate or deactivate the audio, or activate and deactivate the image by clicking on the icons at the bottom left Mute ou Stop the video . By clicking on the up arrows to the right of each icon, you can also access additional settings. It is not necessary for personal use, but rather reserved for experienced users.
  • Other features may interest you: the button Converse allows you to open or close the chat window, the button Save allows the recording of the conversation (be careful to obtain the agreement of the participants!) and the button Reactions allows you to share reactions in the form of emojis. You can also Share screen .
  • Once you are familiar with the interface and the different features, you can invite other participants. To do this, click on the icon Invite.
  • In the new window that opens, you can choose a messaging service to send the invitation to join the video meeting. You can also just click that Copy URL and send it to your guests by pasting it in your usual mailbox. If you click on an email service, the selected service opens in a new window with a pre-written email. You just have to fill in the recipient field and send the email.


  • You can click on End the meeting at the bottom right of the video when you want to end your video chat. You must validate by clicking on End the meeting for all or Leave meeting if you want her to continue without you. A new administrator must then be appointed beforehand.

Please note that in the free version, the meeting ends automatically after 40 minutes.

Join a Zoom group video call from a share link

You can join a video meeting on Zoom whether or not you have a Copt. Again, everything is done with a web browser, after receiving an invitation.


  • After a loading time, a new window opens. This is the video meeting window and you are automatically added as a new participant. If an additional window Join the audio opens, click Join audio through computer . You can also click Test speaker and microphone if you use these accessories.
  • The different meeting parameters are accessible at the top and bottom of the interface. If they are not visible, hover your mouse over the meeting interface to display them.


  • If you want to change your participant name, you can click on the three small dots at the top right of the default name, then on Edit name. Enter a new name in the box provided, then click on OK.
